立原杏所 Tachihara Kyosho (1786-1840)
Nanga painter and samurai of the late Edo period. A samurai of the Mito domain. Initially studied painting under 林十江 Hayashi Jikko (1778-1813) and then under 月僊 Gessen (174-1809). Influenced by the Maruyama-Shijo school, he also studied under 谷文晁 Tani Buncho (1763-1841) after moving to Edo. He also made friends with 渡辺崋山 Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841) and 高久靄厓 Takaku Aigai (1796-1843). His works have a stern and high dignity, and many of them have a clean and uncluttered style.

This hanging scroll presents a refined sansui (landscape) composition depicting a fisherman walking beneath a pine tree amid steep, rocky mountains, evoking a sense of quiet solitude and communion with nature. Rendered with controlled brushwork and subtle ink gradations, the scene reflects the literati ideal of withdrawal from worldly affairs and an appreciation of unadorned natural beauty. The work is by Tachihara Kyōshō (1786–1840), a late Edo-period Nanga painter and samurai of the Mito domain, whose art was shaped by his studies under Hayashi Jikkō and Gessen and later influenced by Tani Bunchō and the Maruyama–Shijō tradition. Kyōshō’s landscapes are noted for their restrained dignity and clarity of composition, qualities evident in the balanced arrangement of rock forms, trees, and the solitary human figure. The scroll is signed “Tachihara Jin hitsu” (立原任筆) and bears seals including “Tachihara Jin in” (立原任印) and “Kōanshori” (香案小吏), and represents a fine example of Edo-period literati landscape painting suitable for tokonoma display or a serious collection of Japanese classical art.
