鈴木百年 Suzuki Hyakunen (1828-1891)
Japanese painter active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era. Founder of the Suzuki school. Born in Kyoto as the son of Suzuki Seikai 鈴木星海 (Zusyo 図書), a Confucian scholar, astronomer and diviner from Ako (Hyogo). From around the age of 10 he was a skilled artist, and when his father asked Hyakunen to copy diagrams of the earth and other objects needed for astronomy, he copied them skillfully. It is said that he learnt painting from Gantai and Kishi Renzan, with whom his father had been in contact because of his service to the Tsuchimikado family, but he was not formally introduced to the art, and was basically self-taught. He is also said to have learnt the colouring method by helping out at the Tosa family. In addition to poetry, he also liked to write Kyoka, and in his later years he wrote letters with Kyoka to many people.
with signature 'Hyakunen' 百年 and seal 'Hyakunen no in' 百年之印
This atmospheric hanging scroll by Suzuki Hyakunen (鈴木百年, 1828–1891) depicts the iconic Uji Bridge (宇治橋) bathed in moonlight, rendered in delicate ink washes that evoke the quiet majesty of Kyoto’s historic landscape. The bridge stretches across a misty expanse, with a pale moon suspended above distant mountains—an image that invites contemplation and poetic reverie. Hyakunen, founder of the Suzuki school, was born in Kyoto to Suzuki Seikai, a Confucian scholar and astronomer. Though largely self-taught, he absorbed influences from Gantai, Kishi Renzan, and the Tosa school, developing a style that blends literati sensibility with refined decorative technique. His early aptitude for copying astronomical diagrams hints at the precision and clarity found in his mature brushwork. Signed “Hyakunen” (百年) and sealed “Hyakunen no in” (百年之印), this scroll is housed in its storage box, preserving a work that reflects both the painter’s poetic spirit and his quiet mastery of ink landscape. A serene and elegant piece, it embodies the transition from Edo to Meiji aesthetics, where tradition and introspection meet.
