Suzuribako (Inkstone Box) is a box to store inkstone and calligraphic tools.
A suzuribako (writing inkstone box) finished in warm brown lacquer, elegantly decorated in gold maki-e with a composition of plum blossoms and pine, motifs long associated with auspicious meanings of resilience, longevity, and renewal in Japanese art. The design is rendered with a balanced clarity, combining stylized natural forms with a refined decorative sensibility, while the interior is finely executed in dense gold nashiji, enhancing the overall visual richness. The structured interior with fitted compartments and inkstone reflects practical use, yet also demonstrates the careful aesthetic consideration typical of the period. Based on the quality of the lacquer, the uniformity of the nashiji ground, and the overall decorative approach, this piece is considered to date from the late Meiji to Taishō period.
